Take your life to new heights

The thing about designing any home in Perth is this: how do you know it will survive the test of time?

Having put his heart and soul into the development of Taskers since 2009, it would be easy to assume Gary Dempsey Developments managing director Gary Dempsey would have real trouble future-proofing the enormous development.

January 2014 saw the first apartment complex, Falcon, start construction and late last year, Tasker’s fourth-stage Tekona building was completed.
So with its fifth and final stage, Siskas, set to break ground later this year, Mr Dempsey knew he had to pull out all the stops to ensure buyers were safe in the knowledge their new homes would stand the test of time on completion in late-2020.

Enter the VTOL – or Vertical Take Off and Landing – station, which is set to change the landscape of apartment living Australia-wide.
“I’ve always been interested in the integration of future technology into construction and I’ve had a keen interest watching what’s been happening in the space,” Mr Dempsey said.

“Uber initially, a few years ago, said they would be introducing autonomous airborne personnel transportation via pretty much adapted high-tech drones in the future and the technology is being worked on as we speak. They are already doing drone deliveries in other parts of the world and testing is well underway with human transportation.

“But now that Rolls Royce, the engine manufacturer, has entered the market to develop autonomous flying transportation, they think they will be commercially viable by the mid-2020s. “So we should be in a position where we can catch these things for pretty much the cost of an Uber or taxi today eventually, but you have to have a place for these things to land.”

And so, the design for Siskas now includes what is essentially a helipad on the building with secure access to the roof for exclusive use by its residents. “This would be extremely expensive, if not impossible, to retrofit on most apartment buildings in the future,” Mr Dempsey said. “The technology and regulation is only still being worked on but it’s very close.”

The VTOL station no doubt highlights Taskers’ ability to set benchmarks for luxury apartment developments in WA, which it has successfully done on many occasions. Firstly, its location at 9 McCabe Street, North Fremantle, at the top end of the peninsula and on the southern border with Mosman Park, means it is in an unrivalled spot to take advantage of views of the Swan River as well as the Indian Ocean.

Taskers has been an industry leader in construction and sustainability, winning the coveted Apartment of the Year honour at the 2016 Master Builders-Bankwest Excellence in Construction Awards and the Best Medium Density Development gong at last year’s UDIA WA Awards for Excellence.

The development lays claim as the first nonsmoking master-planned project in WA – which means no inhaling second-hand cigarette smoke while enjoying those views. It has electric car chargers in all basement parking, and large banks of photovoltaic systems on each building, which are capable of delivering cost-neutral common power to residents.

As the jewel in the crown at Taskers – and named after Olympic medallist Rolly Tasker’s famed yacht – Siskas delivers even more.

“Siskas has a wine appreciation greeting lounge so residents will have their own showcase in the refrigerated wine cellar,” Mr Dempsey said. “There’s also a pilates and yoga studio, massage rooms, and residents can use the existing facilities including 3000sq m of gardens incorporating fruit trees and herb gardens and the 25m heated lap pool, all fully-secure and contained within our gates.”

In the basement, there is also a workshop with workbenches and basic power tools to ensure buyers who move from a house will not miss their sheds.
The apartments in the Siskas release, which will enter the market this weekend, will also up the ante with their fittings and finishes.

“Even the one-bedroom apartments come with Gaggenau appliances, including induction cooktops,” Mr Dempsey said.

“Every home with also feature full bespoke European cabinetry in timber veneers or twopack epoxy finish, stone benchtops, natural stone floors – no ceramic is used anywhere – engineered timber flooring, and the highest acoustic rating for apartments anywhere in Australia.

“And buyers will have the benefit of working with a builder and developer – normally buyers don’t have that luxury – and can talk to me about the many upgrade options to personalise their apartment.”

Every home also features 2.7m ceilings minimum, shadowline detailing on the ceilings, as well as full-height, double-glazed windows and sliding doors. Of the 55 apartments in Siskas, there are one, two, three and four-bedroom configurations including three penthouses, of which one has already been sold ahead of the official launch this weekend.

Selling agent Stephen Vitale said there has already been keen interest in the Siskas release from buyers in the immediate vicinity.

“Buyers are coming from Cottesloe, Mosman Park, North Fremantle and the rest of the western suburbs,” he said. “Those who have seen apartments in the past and have a preconceived idea of what apartment living is, come and experience our display and realise there’s not a lot of compromise if they plan to downsize and sometimes it’s even a bit of an upgrade at Taskers.

” Siskas is also home to some of the biggest apartments on the market in the western suburbs.

“We have three-bedroom apartments over 200sq m in size with balconies up to 88sq m with river and ocean views at the same time, and separate living zones,” Mr Dempsey said. “People who live in big houses always had problems going into apartments, so this is the niche we’re filling; in fact, some people get a bigger apartment than they have house with the penthouse coming in at 350sq m internally with over 200sq m of balcony.”

Mr Vitale said the design of Siskas was a standout for the variety it offered buyers.

“There’s an option for everybody,” he said. “For example, if the purchaser is Cottesloe based, they’ll want a northern aspect and airflow through their apartment and there’s many apartments with that offering.

“Then you’ll get ones who particularly want the river as their desired aspect and there are plenty of those options as well. Whatever buyers desire, there really is an option.”
